From First Lady to First Lady

Hillary becomes the First Lady of Arkansas, 1980. As First Lady, Hillary chairs committees on health and education, serves on the faculty of the University of Arkansas School of Law, continues her work as a litigator, and is appointed to the boards of leading nonprofits and businesses across the United States.
 


Hillary becomes Chair of the Children's Defense Fund Board of Directors, 1987. She guides the children's advocacy organization as it works to secure increased Congressional funding for Head Start, child care, and children's health care.
Hillary becomes the First Lady of the United States, 21 Januari 1993. 

Hillary is appointed Chair of the President's Task Force on National Health Care Reform, 26 Januari 1993. Leading the reform effort, Hillary aims to pass a universal healthcare plan that will improve access and lower costs for millions of uninsured Americans. Though the plan fails, it lays the foundation for the passage of the Children's Health Insurance Plan four years later.


Hillary delivers an address on women's rights at the U.N. Conference on Women in Beijing, China, 6 September 1995. "If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, let it be that human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights once and for all. Let us not forget that among those rights are the right to speak freely -- and the right to be heard," she declares.



Hillary publishes her first book, It Takes A Village: And Other Lessons Children Teach Us, 19 Januari 1996. She writes: "Children are not rugged individualists. They depend on the adults they know and on thousands more who make decisions every day that affect their well-being. All of us, whether we acknowledge it or not, are responsible for deciding whether our children are raised in a nation that doesn't just espouse family values but values families and children."


President Bill Clinton wins re-election, 6 November 1996. The inauguration is the first to be streamed on the Internet. 



Hillary wins a Grammy, 27 Februari 1997. The award: best spoken word album for her reading of "It Takes A Village."
